The Mhiship People of Plateau State, Nigeria

The Mhiship are an ethnic minority in southern Pankshin LGA, Plateau State. Traditionally the Mhiship trace their origins to migrations from the Chad Basin via Kanem-Borno into the Middle Belt. Oral history links them to the historic “Kwarafa” movement from Northeast Africa into central Nigeria. Today about 30,000 Mhiship live in roughly 33 villages (chiefdom) around Kwala, their cultural center.

Settlement and Community Structure

They speak Mhiship (a West Chadic A3 language closely related to Mwaghavul and Mupun) .All villagers are organized under a single chiefdom (Chip Chiefdom) headed by the Ndaalong Miship (paramount chief) in Kwala.
