The Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday unveiled a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as part of effort to settle the more than 16 years of dispute with tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The 2025 agreement is the culmination of a renegotiation process that started in 2017 to review the 2009 Federal Government-ASUU pact which was due for reconsideration in 2012 chaired by committees set up by previous administrations headed by the likes of Wale Babalakin, Munzali Jibril and Nimi Briggs, however all failed to deliver a final agreement.
Performing the unveiling of the agreement in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa described the 40% raise for university lecturers as historic emphasizing that this milestone was part of the promised of President Bola Tinubu to revamp and revitalized the tertiary education sector of the country where there will be no more strikes to tamper with the smooth run of academic calendar of students in universities.
The new financial structure which officially took effect on January 1, 2026, would see full time professors received an additional N1.74 million annually while Readers would receive N840,000 per annum to enable them expand roles in mentorship, research development and institutional administration and other teaching staff would have an increase of 40% in their salaries.
Meanwhile, ASUU awaits full implement of the new agreement and have expressed their fear in failed promises made in the past by previous administrations and there are alleged concern if the State-owned tertiary institutions would follow suit.
